When I first started covering the bridal market, I was so excited about the opportunity to be introduced to a different world besides fashion. My first job was for a prominent black owned fashion and lifestyle magazine. When I gave my editor my wrap up story,I was asked “where are the black models that we can post”. I was only able to give five images. Being so excited about attending bridal market, I didn’t even notice the lack of diversity. I was just happy to see beautiful gowns. This season, I was thrilled to see different shades showcasing stunning gowns and high-five to the designers that hired them.
The bridal industry is for everyone, as we have brides all over the world who buy magazines and visit the websites to get inspirations. It is important to have representation on the runways and advertisement. I am usually not one to cover issues and only focus on fashion but I was really delighted to see women who look like me walk proudly down the runway with beautiful gowns. Looking forward to October Market to see more.
